• Participates in student evaluation conferences;

• Identifies adaptive equipment to permit a child to function more independently in the classroom;

Security Monitor (35 hours) (5 positions)25-033

The Niskayuna Central School District has an opening and is now accepting applications for a Security Monitor (5 positions).

ASSIGNMENT: Districtwide; 10 months per year; 35 hours per week.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The position of Security Monitor is a competitive Schenectady County Civil Service position. Candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service List. If the list is not available, this will be a provisional appointment and the successful candidate must take the SCCSC exam and be reachable.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for patrolling halls, corridors, lavatories, buildings and grounds to protect persons and property and to enforce school rules.  The position is intended to provide maximum security of persons and property while maintaining an atmosphere throughout the school that is conducive to the program of studies. The incumbent will establish a rapport with students in order to assist them with their problems or refer them to someone on the professional staff who can help.  The work is performed under the general direction of the school principal with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Patrols school halls, stairwells, restrooms, courtyards, entrances, parking lots and other parts of school buildings and grounds to protect persons and property, maintain order and insure compliance with school rules;
  • Questions persons on school premises who are not students or staff and advises as to school rules and either directs visitors to school offices or asks them to leave;
  • Reports periodically to principal on problems, incidents and conditions affecting security, either orally or in writing;
  • Interacts and develops rapport with students in order to act as a sounding board so students have someone to talk to about their school or personal problems, and either assists them or refers them to someone who can help them;
  • Advises parents, teachers, counselors or principal about potential or actual student problems concerning class-cutting, truancy, disciplinary or other school or personal problems;
  • May supervise the loading of buses and follow buses on routes or on field trips to make sure no discipline problems develop;
  • May work in a detention class or "time out" room calming down students and conferring with them as to the importance of  remaining in school and of maintaining proper school behavior;
  • Checks student attendance by verifying daily records against teacher attendance records, records absences or class cuts,  notes late students, verifies absence notes and contacts parents as to problems;
  • Participates in the development and implementation of district  security plans;
  • May act as liaison with local and state police agencies;
  • May answer requests from parents, probation officers and counselors regarding attendance and, in essence, acts as a liaison between home and school;
  • May act as a contact with the outside community for the benefit of the students to help them get jobs or into programs and assists in arranging for community-based school activities such as field trips.

ASSIGNMENT: District Wide; 11 months per year;

SUMMARY: 

The Director of Science, Engineering & Technology leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the Niskayuna School District’s science, engineering and technology programs.  The goal is to plan and maintain a sound, well-articulated instructional program by working with pupils, teachers, administrators, and parents.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership in the development of curriculum, including the scope and sequence of academic programs and plans for continuity and articulation from one level of achievement to the next
  • Develop, articulate and disseminate department goals in coordination with district and building goals
  • Provide ongoing teaching support for all faculty within the academic discipline, including modeling, coaching and other techniques, the purpose of which is to improve instruction
  • Conduct formal and informal observations that provide high-quality feedback and guidance on how to improve instruction consistent with district APPR guidelines
  • Provide staff development that enables teachers to accomplish locally identified goals, as well as goals enacted through national and state directives
  • Coordinate recruitment, screening, interviewing and reference checks of job applicants to ensure employment of teachers consistent with the high standards of the district
  • Plan and facilitate department meetings that address business and professional development needs
  • Organize and oversee administration and scoring of all standardized testing (local, state and other) to ensure appropriate training of test scorers and reliable calculation of student scores
  • Analyze and interpret local and state assessment results to provide feedback that can serve as a basis for ongoing and collaborative review of student work for the purpose of increasing student achievement
  • Provide leadership for the identification of program gaps and inconsistencies and subsequent changes that lead to more coherent and effective instruction
  • Ensure provision of necessary support services to students based on individual student needs, coordinating with diverse stakeholders to ensure delivery of required and effective services to students with special needs.
  • Examine, evaluate, select and recommend (in conjunction with principals, teaching staff and central office administration) educational resources including classroom supplies, instructional technology, equipment and textbooks
  • Oversee procedures of purchase, inventory and safe storage of all department materials and equipment
  • Develop and administer a comprehensive budget, in conjunction with building principals and district office that is consistent with the goals and objectives of the district and the needs of the discipline’s instructional program
  • Cooperatively with building principals and other department directors identify teaching assignments, course offerings and sectioning decisions that promote high quality educational opportunities for all students
  • Communicate with the District leadership, building principals, teacher leaders, parents, students and community members regarding important departmental matters
  • Provide building and district publicity specialists with information that keeps the school community informed on noteworthy developments within the department
  • Attend meetings of district leadership, department directors and other meetings associated with other district and building matters to gain an awareness of and contribute effectively to the development of the entire school program
