Job Description

The Niskayuna Central School District is now accepting applications for a probationary Head Custodian.

ASSIGNMENT: Hillside Elementary School; 12 months per year; 40.00 hours per week.

GENERAL INFORMATION: This position involves responsibility for supervising a variety of custodial, maintenance and heating operations of a large school building or a number of smaller school buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent is under general supervision of a Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or another superior with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the performance of tasks.  General supervision is exercised over a number of Senior Custodians, Custodians and other maintenance and cleaning staff.  The incumbent does related work as required.

The position of Head Custodian is a competitive Schenectady County Civil Service position. Candidates must meet Civil Service requirements for appointment.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Dusts chairs, tables desks and other furniture;
• Supervises the operation and maintenance of the heating system;
• Makes regular inspections of buildings and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance procedures and makes recommendations for improvements or new equipment;
• Inspects and otherwise exercises control over maintenance work performed by outside contractors;
• Checks to insure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked and in readiness for all activities;
• Keeps records and makes reports of supplies used and work done;
• Assists with cleaning and maintenance activities when necessary;
• Reports any acts of vandalism or breakage to proper authorities;
• Requisitions and dispenses custodial and maintenance supplies;
• Generates work requests;
• Performs a variety of related tasks as required.

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

OPEN COMPETITIVE:

1. Two years of experience as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, mechanic or other trades work, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR
2. Three years of experience in building cleaning and maintenance work, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR
3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above

PROMOTION:

1. Six months permanent status as a Senior Custodian or twelve months permanent status as a Custodian.
