Job Description

The Niskayuna Central School District is now accepting applications for a probationary track Director - Social Studies & World Languages.

ASSIGNMENT: District Wide; 11 months per year;

SUMMARY: 

The Director of Social Studies and World Languages leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the Niskayuna School District’s social studies and world languages programs.  The goal is to plan and maintain a sound, well-articulated instructional program by working with pupils, teachers, administrators, and parents.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership in the development of curriculum, including the scope and sequence of academic programs and plans for continuity and articulation from one level of achievement to the next
  • Develop, articulate and disseminate department goals in coordination with district and building goals
  • Provide ongoing teaching support for all faculty within the academic discipline, including modeling, coaching and other techniques, the purpose of which is to improve instruction
  • Conduct formal and informal observations that provide high-quality feedback and guidance on how to improve instruction consistent with district APPR guidelines
  • Provide staff development that enables teachers to accomplish locally identified goals, as well as goals enacted through national and state directives
  • Coordinate recruitment, screening, interviewing and reference checks of job applicants to ensure employment of teachers consistent with the high standards of the district
  • Plan and facilitate department meetings that address business and professional development needs
  • Organize and oversee administration and scoring of all standardized testing (local, state and other) to ensure appropriate training of test scorers and reliable calculation of student scores
  • Analyze and interpret local and state assessment results to provide feedback that can serve as a basis for ongoing and collaborative review of student work for the purpose of increasing student achievement
  • Provide leadership for the identification of program gaps and inconsistencies and subsequent changes that lead to more coherent and effective instruction
  • Ensure provision of necessary support services to students based on individual student needs, coordinating with diverse stakeholders to ensure delivery of required and effective services to students with special needs.
  • Examine, evaluate, select and recommend (in conjunction with principals, teaching staff and central office administration) educational resources including classroom supplies, instructional technology, equipment and textbooks
  • Oversee procedures of purchase, inventory and safe storage of all department materials and equipment
  • Develop and administer a comprehensive budget, in conjunction with building principals and district office that is consistent with the goals and objectives of the district and the needs of the discipline’s instructional program
  • Cooperatively with building principals and other department directors identify teaching assignments, course offerings and sectioning decisions that promote high quality educational opportunities for all students
  • Communicate with the District leadership, building principals, teacher leaders, parents, students and community members regarding important departmental matters
  • Provide building and district publicity specialists with information that keeps the school community informed on noteworthy developments within the department
  • Attend meetings of district leadership, department directors and other meetings associated with other district and building matters to gain an awareness of and contribute effectively to the development of the entire school program
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current New York State Certification as School District Leader or School District Administrator
  • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching Social Studies or World Languages
  • Two (2) years of experience as a school district administrator, preferred
