Job Description

The Niskayuna Central School District is now accepting applications for a probationary Senior Environmental Systems and Facilities Mechanic.

ASSIGNMENT: District Wide; 12 months per year; 40 hours per week.

GENERAL INFORMATION: This is a senior level maintenance position involving the responsibility for supervision and performance of highly skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of building heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, and boiler systems.  May perform other maintenance and repair work in connection with buildings, grounds or equipment.  General supervision is received from a higher level supervisor with considerable leeway allowed for planning the details of the work.  This position supervises and directs the work of several subordinate staff.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

In addition to the typical work activities of the Environmental Systems and Facilities Mechanic; the Senior Environment Systems and Facilities Mechanic has additional work activities as follows:

  • Supervises the repair and installation of various heating and cooling, and refrigeration equipment and systems including, but not limited to, air conditioners, heat pumps, VAV’s, boilers, fan coil units, air handling units, cooling towers, relays, plumbing, and related equipment and electrical systems;

  • Schedules the work of subordinate staff;

  • Ability to use computer and/or digital software to create, complete and assign tasks; 

  • Investigates and resolves complaints concerning heating and ventilating;

  • May inspect the installation of related work performed by contractors and subordinate employees;

  • Orders all necessary materials using computer-based systems;

  • Develops complex cost estimates relating to heating, cooling, refrigeration, plumbing and boiler, projects and related systems; 

  • Develops appropriate operating, repair, and maintenance schedules for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing and boiler equipment and systems;

  • Responsible for ensuring that work performed on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing and boiler equipment and systems is in compliance with application standards;

  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: In addition to the knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics of the Environmental Systems and Facilities Mechanic, the Senior Environment Systems and Facilities Mechanic has additional knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics as follows.

  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others;

  • Ability to assign and manage workflow using digital and/or computer applications;

  • Ability to use good judgment and make independent decisions

  • Ability to interact with customers when investigating and resolving complaints

  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state requirements for various HVAC-R and boiler systems;

  • Ability to use math and/or spreadsheets to prepare cost estimates;

  • Ability to use calendar tools to develop maintenance and repair schedules

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college or university with an Associate's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Technology or a related field plus four (4) years of experience which shall have involved the installation, operation or maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration or boiler equipment in a commercial or non-residential facility; OR

(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma plus six (6) years of experience which shall have involved the installation, operation or maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration or boiler equipment in a commercial or non-residential facility; OR

(C) Eight (8) years of experience which shall have involved the installation, operation or maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration or boiler equipment in a commercial or non-residential facility; OR

(D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  

  1. At the time of appointment and throughout the tenure of employment, you must have and maintain appropriate certifications in either HVAC-R, or boiler maintenance and repair.

  2. At the time of appointment and throughout the tenure of employment, you must have and maintain a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
