Job Description

The Niskayuna Central School District is now accepting applications for a probationary Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician.

ASSIGNMENT: ASSIGNMENT; 12 months per year; 40.00 hours per week.

GENERAL INFORMATION: 

This position involves skilled electrical work in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring, apparatus and equipment.  General supervision is received from a higher level supervisor with considerable leeway allowed for planning the details of the work.  Direct supervision may be exercised over a variety of skilled and non-skilled employees.  The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Leads in the installation and repair of electrical light and power equipment in buildings and related facilities;

  • Installs, maintains and repairs electric motors, pumps, and generators;

  • Installs and repairs fixtures, switches, lamps, etc.;

  • Repairs and adjusts circuit breakers and regulators by replacing work parts and repairing burned out contacts;

  • Inspects and repairs wiring, cables, indicators, and control systems;

  • Inspects and repairs a variety of electrical equipment as assigned;

  • Keeps an inventory of all tools used in electrical work;

  • Prepares requisitions for electrical tools and equipment;

  • May perform various groundskeeper activities;

  • May perform other skilled maintenance activities;

  • May supervise the work of subordinates on a work project;

  • May operate a truck or other automotive equipment;

  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:

  1. Completion of a trade school program specializing in skilled electrical work and two years of experience as a certified journey-level electrician OR;

  1. Five (5) years of experience in the field of electrical work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS-CITY OF SCHENECTADY: Possession at the time of appointment of a Master Electrician's license issued by the City of Schenectady.
